GKIDS, a well-known distributor of Academy Award-winning animated films including Hayao Miyazaki’s huge Studio Ghibli catalogue, has announced a new agreement with Fathom Events to exclusively release The Deer King at fan previews on July 13 and 14, before a limited theatre release on July 15. Production I.G, a well-known animation studio, and directors Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji are behind the new animated film.
The Deer King will premiere in theatres on July 13 with the original Japanese soundtrack, followed by the English dub the following day. These screenings will also feature an exclusive introduction by Ando, who has worked on a variety of projects with Studio Ghibli, including as a character designer, animation director, and key animator on the films Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. On Paprika and Paranoia Agent, he collaborated with acclaimed director Satoshi Kon.
Miyaji is best known for directing the 2009 anime series Xam’s: Lost Memories and for his work on the Studio Ghibli films My Neighbor Totoro and The Yamadas, the latter of which is an adaptation of author Nahoko Uehashi’s original book series, which won the Booksellers Award and the Japan Medical Novel Award in 2015. In Japan, the novel went on to sell over 2.2 million copies.

Ando makes his directorial debut with this picture, which is described as a “sweeping fantasy epic.” Beginning June 10, tickets for the exclusive fan screenings will be available through Fathom Events or the GKIDS page for The Deer King. This date may vary depending on local cinemas and theatre chains.
