Bitterbrush, Magnolia Pictures’ next documentary, features a trailer that emphasises hard effort. The video follows two range riders called Hollyn Patterson and Colie Moline as they embark on their final summer of herding cattle in the Idaho wilderness. The trailer takes viewers on the women’s daily journeys in the solitude of nature, with all of its ups and downs, including the ever-changing weather, in a life that many couldn’t conceive. The two set out to build a reputation for themselves in the ranching world, aided by their trusty dogs.
The Emelie Mahdavian-directed film’s trailer portrays a very human story centred on tenacity and drive, as the two ladies rely on one another to complete their tasks. They keep themselves occupied miles away from other humans with stories, quips, and, of course, a lot of labour. It’s great to see Patterson and Moline’s narrative unfold in an industry dominated by men. Even in cinema and television, with productions like The Power of the Dog and Yellowstone, women rarely get their moment to shine and show their power and grit on par with their male counterparts.
The film also released a poster to coincide with the trailer’s release. One of the women is pictured riding a horse with her back to the camera. The herder is dressed in a striped shirt tucked into a pair of blue pants with a leather belt while holding the reins. What else but a black cowboy hat brings the look together? The top of the photo proclaims the title of the film, displays numerous of the critical accolades it has already received, and celebrates its selection as a Telluride Film Festival Official Selection for 2021.
On June 17, the film will be released in theatres and on demand. Su Kim and Mahdavian created the film on June 24. Executive producers are Laurene Powell Jobs, Davis Guggenheim, Joe Plummer, Jonathan Silberberg, Nicole Stott, and Jenifer Westphal.
Magnolia Pictures has been a major player in documentary filmmaking over the past two decades. The business has delved into conspiracy theories, criminal cases, well-known figures, and, in the case of Bitterbrush, the unsung yet interesting lives of ordinary people. Magnolia has taken great care in crafting their storylines to ensure that audiences are entertained at every turn.
