HBO Max and Cartoon Network have announced that the beloved American Girl franchise would be coming to their respective networks in an effort to attract a younger population to the streaming platform. They’ve just given the green light to two 60-minute live-action specials based on Mattel’s American Girl line, which features a wide range of dolls with various origins that help children learn about different periods of history.
The working title for the first special is American Girl: Corinne Tan. Corrine Tan, the doll brand’s 2022 Girl of the Year, will star in the programme, which will follow the 13-year-old ski fanatic as she navigates her parents’ divorce. Gwynn, her 10-year-old sister, is having trouble adjusting to life in a new blended family. She was able to discover a new purpose and sense of direction when she decided to train a puppy named Flurry to become a search-and-rescue dog. Perseverance, self-acceptance, and sisterhood will all be explored in this special.
“The live-action specials unveiled today reflect the sweetness, the funniness, the chaos, and the messy imperfect genius of growing up and discovering who you are,” Amy Friedman, head of kids and family programming at Warner Bros., said of the new special.
Let’s face it, most of us can still identify with all of those emotions, which is why this stuff is so compelling.” She went on, “These projects exemplify our goal to bringing more girls and teens to HBO Max and Cartoon Network by telling authentic, engaging, courageous, and emotional stories that connect to children’s lives today.”
Angela Tortu, who previously worked on Fresh Off the Boat, will direct American Girl: Corinne Tan, which stars Miya Cech as Corinne, Kai Cech as her sister Gwynn, and Michelle Krusiec as their mother Judy. Fred Soulie and Phil Breman of Mattel Television are executive producers of American Girl: Corinne Tan. MarVista Entertainment’s executive producers on the special are Larry Grimaldi, Hannah Pillemer, and Fernando Szew. Co-executive producer Adam Shepard is on board.
According to today’s announcement, a second American Girl special is in the works. The plot and title have yet to be revealed, but it is slated to launch next year. American Girl: Corinne Tan will air on Cartoon Network in the United States in December and will be accessible on HBO Max the following day.
